Bettas (also known as Siamese Fighting fish) are an ornamental species that have been bred to achieve many different colours and fin shapes. Bettas are easy to care for and we have listed instructions below to help you keep these wonderful fish.

Siamese fighting fish, also known as betta fish, are generally kept alone in aquariums because they are highly aggressive towards other bettas, even their own reflection. While they can be kept in community tanks with certain compatible species, it's crucial to choose peaceful, non-fin-nipping fish and ensure the tank is large enough to accommodate all inhabitants.

Tank Size and Setup:
  • A minimum of 5 gallons (19 liters) is recommended for a single betta, but a 10-gallon (38 liters) tank is preferred for more space and stable water parameters.
  • A lid is essential to prevent the betta from jumping out, as they are prone to this behavior.
  • Choose a filter with adjustable flow, as bettas prefer low water flow.
  • A heater is needed to maintain the desired temperature range of 25-28°C.
  • Consider live plants for decoration, as they can help create hiding places and reduce stress,
  • Avoid sharp rocks or ornaments that could injure their long, flowing fins.
Water Parameters:
  • Betta fish prefer a water temperature between 25-28°C.
  • They are not particularly fussy about water conditions, but a neutral pH and moderate general hardness is generally recommended,
  • Regular partial water changes are crucial, especially if the betta is kept in a small bowl or vase.
Compatible Tank Mates:
  • Bottom-dwelling fish:
Corydoras catfish are a good choice, as they stay at the bottom of the tank and are generally peaceful,
  • Mid-level fish:
Tetras can be good companions, as long as they are not aggressive fin-nippers.
  • Other peaceful fish:
Loaches, platies, and snails can also be suitable tank mates,
  • Avoid:
Fin-nipping fish like some types of tetras or male guppies, as they may be drawn to the betta's long fins and cause stress.
Aggression:
  • Male betta fish are known for their aggressive behavior towards each other.
  • They will even fight with their own reflection in a mirror or shiny object,
  • For this reason, it's best to keep only one male betta in an aquarium,
  • While females are more tolerant of each other, sororities (aquariums with all female bettas) are not recommended unless you are an experienced fish keeper,
